DEATH OF SAMUEL TURTLE
FATAL ISSUE OF AN ACCIDENT. Auckland, J une 16. Mr Saji pei, Turtle died at the District Hospital at a quarter-past six o’clock this morning, from injuries sustained through falling downstairs on Saturday night week at the Masonic Hotel, Devonporb. It will be remembered that deceased was found lying in an unconscious state at the foot of fehe stairs, having fallen whilst going up to his bedroom. He was forwarded to the Hospital, and from the firsb little hope was entertained of his recovery. During the past week Mr Turtle made his will, having recovered consciousness. Last night he again lapsed into a comatose state, and death supervened early this morning. The deceased was a single man, 49 years of age, his only surviving relative being a sister in County Antrim, Ireland. He was well known on the Thames, and more recently became a member of the Brokers’ Association, Auckland, where his genial disposition had caused him to have many friends. As Mr Turtle was a member of the Sir Walter Scott Lodge of Freemasons, at the Thames, the brethren of the craft have undertaken the care of his funeralobsequies. It has been arranged that the funeral will leave the Hospital at 1.30 o’clock to-morrow afternoon, and meet thes.s. Rotomahana at the Queen-street Wharf at 2.15 o’clock, by which the remains will be removed to the Thames. On Wednesday a Masonic funeral will be accorded the deceased, the interment taking place at the Tararu Cemetery.
Deceased was in good circumstances, and pending further arrangements, Mr Foughy is attending to matters pertaining to hia business.
During tho day the various coastal steamers had the flags half-mast high as a token of respect for the deceased. As wo went to press Dr. Philson was holding a coronorial inquiry at the Hospital into the circumstances connected with the accident.
