NEW IRONWORKS.
LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE.
Auckland, June 16. A very interesting ceremony took place at Onehunga to-day, the event being the laying of the foundation stone of Messrs Gettings and Co.’s new ironworks or galvanised bucket factory. The stone was laid by Sir G. M. * O’Rorke, who was presented with a silver trowel suitably inscribed. A large number were present, including the Mayor and Corporation of Onehunga. In presenting the trowel to Sir Maurice, Mr Miller, one of the firm, congratulated the Company that the foundation stone of the building was being laid by a staunch projectionist, and gave some particulars respecting tha difficulties with which the iron industry had to contend in the greab colony of New Soutli Wales. Sir G. M. O’Rorke delivered a brief but eloquent address prior to laying the stone, in which ho commented on the importance of tbe iron industry to Onehunga, and tho advancement and progress which the town had manifested during the past two years. After the laying of the stone, Mr Miller handed to His Worship the Mayor of Onehunga (Captain Yates) and Mr D. Neilson one handsome frame each, containing a set of horse shoes highly burnished, manufactured out of Onehungamade iron by Mr Turner, a local blacksmith. The Mayor and Mr Neilson responded in suitable terms, the former gentleman remarking that they had that day witnessed the launching of the eleventh industry in Onehunga. Mr Lyell, a member of the firm, gave a few particular’s respecting the intention of tho promoters of the industry, and stated that they did not mean to run in opposition to the existing Onehunga iron works, or any other industry in New Zealand. At the invitation of Messrs Gettings and Company, a number of gentlemen, including Sir G. M. O’Rorke, the Mayor and memhers of the Borough Council. Dr. W. R. Erson and others then adjourned to the Company’s offices, where they were entertained at luncheon provided by Mrs Waterman, of the Manukau Hotel.
