THE BISHOP OF PETERBOROUGH AND MR JUSTICE BOUCAUT.

Some time ago we drew attention to certain extraordinary remarks addressed by Mr Justice Boucaut, of South Australia, to a witness who was about to bo sworn on the Bible. The erring judge was also taken severely to task by the Bishop of Adelaide, and made a very lame defence of his conduct. His remarks have now elicited a sharp rejoinder from the Bishop of Peterborough, whose name he had most unwarrantably imported into his comments. The Bishop’s letter was addressed to the Bishop of Adelaide, and runs as follows : “Palace, Peterborough, April 21. “ My dear Lord, —I have just seen in an Australian paper your correspondence on Judge Boucuut relating to his annoying utterance about myself. Pray accept my best thanks for your prompt action and kind defence of an absent brother. The explanation that you succeeded in obtaining from my accuser, lame as it is, is amply sufficient, so far as I am concerned. His ignorance of ordinary theological terms, as evinced in his confounding plenary with verbal inspiration is, perhaps, his best excuse for his libel, though it does nob excuse his dragging my name into his logal rulings. I had already heard from the Australian clergyon the subject, and had written to one of them (Mr Campbell) my denial of the statement in question, with an authority to publish it. I trust that this, together with your own timely intervention, may prevent the mischief that might otherwise have resulted in the minds of uninstructcd persons from thia absurdly ignorant and false representation of my views. Believe me, with many thanks, yours, truly and fraternally, W. C. Peteruorougu.” Auckland Star” JunelO.
