CLERGYMAN ON BARMAIDS.

THEIR. CALLING “A CHRISTIAN MINISTRY.”

The Rev. Charles Marrs'on, of St. Peter’s Church, Glenelg, ha 3, says an Adelaide telegram, sent an extraordinary letter to the press defending barmaids. He says : “ Allow me to protest against the dirtyminded and insolent people who would, under plea of advocating Gospel temperance, affix the brand of harlotry upon those engaged in one branch of the Christian ministry, our barmaids. These hard - working and long - suffering girls, who truly serve God in their vocation and ministry, deserve a more chivalrous treatment than they receivo at the hands of their reviling accusers. If they have extra temptations, they should receive extra protection, and not slander anddefamation, from those who care for the beautiful life. I indignantly deny that the vocation of bar maid is generally inconsistent with chastity. I have many friends among those so engaged, and honestly believe their profession containsno greater proportion of lewdwomen than any other trade. If barmaidsareexposed to rude and profane language, their virtueu are certainly robuet enough not to go into a galloping consumption thereupon ; bub the rude and profane language they hear in bars is certainly no ruder or profaner than they would hear from the smug and sanctimonious professors of so-called Gospel temperance. I can only recommend theee , unfortunate slanderers to go regularly to the bar, and drink of the excellent wines of the colony, and procure the honour of an acquaintance with a large number of the girls who wait there, and thus get thoif unaraiable delusions dispelled
