Annual Licensing Meetings.
TE A ROM A. The annual meeting of the Te Aroha Licensing Committee was held on Monday last. Present: Messrs W. Hetlirington, G.* Lipsey, li. Harris, and J. B. Heathcote, Tile annual election of a Licensing Committee for Te Aroha Licensing .District liuving fallen through, owing to the nominator of several of the candidates not being yn the electoral roll, the outgoing Coinmitteee were re-appointed by Order-in-Ootineil, 'lhe first business done was therefore the election of it Chairman ; Mr G. Lipsey, on the motion of Mr Harris, seconded by
Mr Tfeathcote, being appointed to th« pffli-ifion.
The minutes of the previous annual meeting wnrp read and confirmed.
The following applications were then oonGdored •
Renewal of Puhlienn’s Licenses : fleo. Fhnrt. for Palace Hotel. Te Arolia; Arthur A. Smith,for TTot Spr’nge Hotel, Te Aroha; Arthur Downes, f >rClnb Hotel. Te Aroha: Samuel T. Smardon,' for Wniorongomni Hotel. Wniornnemntni ; Martin Murphy, for Premier Hotel, Wniorongomni ; Abraham Danes, for Okoroire Hote 1 , Oxford, There were no objeetious to nnv of tbe«e applications, and they were all granted. Renewal of Accommodation License : Alexander T-T*»nnv applied for renewal of flppommndntion license for Oxford Hotel, Lichfield.
Thi» police reported most favonraldv, and the apnlieation was granted ; the fee to be as before, LlO. A pptieatioß. for N°w Lieepse : William TTeprv Thomson applied for a pubh'eap’s license for the premises known as the Familv Hotel. Te Aroha. Sergeant Emerson, on behalf of the Police objected to the granting of the license, and the following report by him was read bv the Cleric: —
“The house is nut of repair. Pome of the reruns are insufficiently furnished. The premises are not kept clean. The house is conducted in an improper manner ; and drunkenness permitted therein often up to a late hour at night. The doors nre locked against, the police. Complaints have been repeated’v made by the relatives or friends, nf prohibited persons being supplied in the hotel with liquor, although copies were served on the licensee forbidding him to mipplv any intoxienting liquor for the space of one year to the«e people. Seemingly no notice was taken of the order made bv the Court, hut the law and the police put at defiance. These people have been often seen by the police in the hotel and leaving it at a late hour under the influence of drink. Complaints have also been made by persona losing money in the house when under the influence of liquor. I would therefore respectfully recommend that unless the owner repairs the premises and find a fit person to carry on the business of the house in a. proper manner, that the hotel be closed a« it is not required in the neighbourhood.” The Police report further stated that the roof of the house was leaking, the paper falling off the walla, and the furniture very poor. A letter to the Chairman from Mr Ehrenfried, the owner of the premises, wns read, to the effect that if the Committee would grant the license, he would undertake to have n licensee for the house with whom the Court and also the Police world he satisfied, within two mouths.
On the motion of the Chairman the Committee resolved to retire in order to discuss what they would do with respect to this application in privnte. Sergeant Emerson, in renlvto the Committee stating that if Mr Ehrefried carried out what he had promised in h : s letter, the Police would not further object to the granting of a license for the premises, the Committee decided to grant the present applicant a license for three months.
Reduction of Fee : Geo. Ebert, on behalf of himself and the other licensee’s within Te Aroha Town District, asked the Chairman if the Committee would recommend Government to grant power to have the fee reduced from L4O to Las ; and stated several other districts had made a move in that direction. The Chairman said the application would he considered. This was all the business. WAJTOA. The anual meeting of the Wnitoa Licensing Committee was held at Morrinsville on Saturday last. Present : Messrs Chepmell (Chairman), Marshall, and Clifford. Minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. The following applications were considered : Renewal : Albert Gabolinscy, for a renewal of publicans license for the Wniliou Hotel, Waihou. No objection. Granted. Transfer: Tims. Issott Grange, for transfer of publican’s license, with respect to the Nottingham Castle Hotel, Morrinsville, from John Smith to himself. No objection. Granted. New License : Tlios. Issott Grange, tlint a new publican’s license he issued to him for the premises known as the Nottingham Castle Hotel, Morrinsville. Granted. This was all the business. OHINEMURI. The annual meeting el! tlm Ohinemuri Licensing Committee was held on Monday. Present: Messrs K. Edwards (Chairman), J. Phillips, junr., N, Dickey, J Barrett, and F. Lipsey. The following applications were considered : Accommodation License : Renata Tamati for Accommodation License for premises situated at Otalm, Whangamata. application refused, the premises not being within Ohinemuri Licensing District. Renewals :The applications of John H, Moore, Asher Oassrells, James M. Coote, Margaret H. Mahoney, Maurice G.Power, for renewal of publican’s licenses for hotels situated at Paeroa ; of Alfred Shep herd and John Kelly, for renewal of publican’s licenses for hotels at Karangahake, were granted. The applcotion of Carroll Nash for renewal of publican’s license for Mackaytown Hotel was adjourned to June 30th, to admit of the applicant being present. The application of William McKenna, for the Owharoa Hotel, was adjourned to Jdne 30th, the Police report being unfavourable. The application of Percy Nowill for renewal of license for the Waihi Hotel, was also adjourned till June 30th, to enable the owner of the premises to meantime nominate a successor to the present licensee for approval by the Committee.
