“NOTHING IN IT.”
MURDER REPORTED TO THE POLICE. Auckland, June 6. Great crimes usually travel in circles. New Plymouth has had its murder and therefore Aucklanders may expect a turn shortly. Yesterday afternoon a murder was reported to the police in Auckland by Mr Clendon, R.M. It appears that a Maori telegraphed to him that a murder or criminal assault had been committed at Makarau. Mr Clendon at once forwarded the information to Inspector Broham, coupled with a request that Constable O’Brien, of Helensville, might be despatched to make enquiries and report. As the 4.35 train for Helensville was just starting Constable Donovan was sent up to render assistance to Constable O’Brien. The place where the murder was stated to have been committed was some 16 miles away. After travelling this distance the supposed murdered man was discovered in a perfect state of convalescence and worth 40 dead men. He appeared surprised at the rumour that he had been killed, and explained matters. It seems that on last Monday at 10 a.m., two natives Waru Mate and Honeri Rewlnti—were out pheasant shooting at Makarau bush. Henri Rawhiti shot at a pheasant, and by some means six pellets struck Waru Mate on the left side. The pellets only entered the skin, and Waru Mate himself states that the whole thing was an accident. Thus vanishes another probable sensation.
