AUCKLAND WINTER MEETING. Auckland, Juno 9. Although the attendance was small at the commencement of the Auckland Racing Club Winter Meeting on Saturday, it gradually increased as the afternoon wore on, and at least 2,000 spectators were present when the Great Northern Steeplechase was run. When the numbers were hoisted for the event, Auckland and Orangeman were made the favourites out of the six starters. Kangaroo was suffering from shin-soreness, while Jenny’s form in the Hurdle Race was not thought sufficiently good for the public to think she could win, consequently the great majority stood off her. The race is easily described. Jenny went to the front at the second obstacle, and was never afterwards headed, winning easily from Auckland by thirty or forty lengths. Mr Percival deserves credit for the arrangements of the meeting, the races being got off well to time, and the totalizators were satisfactorily worked by Mr W. Blorafield. Appended are details of the three concluding races : Great Northern Steeplechase Handicap of 300sovs Second horse to receive 30sovs, and third horse lOsovs out of the stakes. About three and a-half miles. In. Out. 40— 37 Mr W. Barnard’s ch m Jenny, syrs, by Puriri—Dead Shot mare, 10st 31b (Johnston)... 1 138—128 Mr E. McElvvain’s br g Auckland, 4yrs, lOst 31b (Cameron) 2 42—46 Mr G. Wright’s b g Orlando, aged, lOst 121 b (Frewin) ... 3 125—114 MrJ. Rae’s b g Orangeman, aged, 12st 2lb (owner) 85 —103 Mr F. Martin’s br g Kangaroo, aged, listslb. (Pell) 22 16 Mr J. Maitland’s ch g Parnell, aged, 9sb 121 b (Morrigan) 452 444 When the flag dropped, Parnell went to the front and was quickest to 1 negotiate the first hurdle, but at the newly-made “ brush obstacle,” Jenny drew level with Parnell, and the first-named led up the hill, Auckland being whipper-in of the field. At the post and rail Jenny had increased her lead and was fully five lengths in Iront of Parnell, Orangeman and Orlando following in that order, with Kangaroo and Auckland last. Jenny was making the pace very fast, despite the heavy ground, and she had several lengths’ advantage over the stone wall, sod bank, anri the two water jumps, the position of the rest of the field having undergone no change. Ascending the hill for the second time, Parnell was only two lengths behind Jenny, while fully 100 yards in the rear were Orlando and Orangeman, with Kangaroo and Auckland still last. The field successfully negotiated the jumps on the top of the hill, but at the stone wall coming on the course, Parnell came down. With Parnell out of the road, Jenny now had a long lead, and when the double jump in front of the grandstand was reached, she had something like 50 lengths’ advantage of Orangemen, Orlando being third, and Auckland fourth, while Kangaroo was toiling in last place, and soon after was pulled ; up. After the old water jump was got over Auckland made his effort, and ascending the hill for the last time had run into second place, Orlando also passing Orangeman, who was evidently done with. Coming down the hill for home, cries went up that Auckland would get up to Jenny, but it was quickly seen to be a false hope, for the daughter of Puriri was full of running, and taking her jumps in beautiful style, ran down tbe straight the easiest of winners by thirty or forty lengths, Orlando being about a similar distance away, third. Orangeman was pulled up at the top of the hill. Time, Bmin 55sec. Dividends : Inside, £lO 3s; outside, £lO 16s. Selling Steeplechase of 70sovs. About three miles. MrJ.
