POETRY.

IN MEMORIAM. H. M. G. Died May 16,1890, aged 14 years. Kind little friend, thy gentle heart No more in this cold world will beat; The pang is ours—to us the smart; Life’s ending, dear, to thee was sweet, If true what seer and poet sung—- “ They whom the gods love well die young. We grieve, but oh 1 we cannot feel Thy mother’s grief of love sublime, Nor close the wounds that barely heal Beneath the soothing touch of Time. Great, lasting sorrow wrings her breast. While thou hast gained the heavenly rest. Though finished evermore thy race On earth, when death’s dark night be past We shall again behold thy face, In God’s eternal light at last. When shadows hideous melt away, And cloudless shines an endless day. Homra. Auckland, May 19th, 1890.
