Thk Chi’ysanth,e,m,u,m Show was held in the Choral Hall to-day. The display was a* splendid one. Two liundred varieties were shown, some of them measuring six inches in diameter. THE GOVERNMENT INSUR- ' ANCE DEPARTMENT ; ' • VACANCY, '■'* WELLINGTON, Last Night. It is undorstooil that the vacancy in the Government Insurance Department, caused by the resignation ofMrFrankland, has been conferred on Mr RichardBon, the Secretary and Accountant to the Department. PROPOSED REDUCED POSTAL RATES. . - ; The Government lias received a cablegram from the Agent General, asking if they are prepared to make any recommendation to. Parliament in connection with the proposed reduction of postal rates. A reply has been sent stating the Government are quite prepared to consider any proposals, but the matter will not be discussed until a full Cabinet meets. PROPOSED GOVERNMENT ' PURCHASE OF LAND. The Government have had several valuations made of the East Const Company’s land at Gisborne, and will shortly be able to make the owners an offer for
the lot. THE CABLE AT COOK STRAIT. One of the New Zealand Government cables across Cook Straits has been giving a good deal of trouble, and on the arrival of the. Cable Company’s steamer, tjie cable will be under run, for the purpose of examination-
