MR HENRY VARLEY.
Auckland, April 2. Mr Henry Varley, evangelist, gave the first of a series of addresses in the Opera House last evening. There was a large audience, and a choir composed of members of the Gospel Temperance and City Hall choirs, assisted by others, under the leadership of Mr J. L. Innes, occupied the stage. After the opening service, Mr Varlev read the second chapter of St. Luke, and based his address on the verse, “ Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people, foi unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” His address was able, well thought out, and logical, and it was listened to with thegreatesbof interest. At the close of the address Mr Varley appealed to those who felt that they had been saved to testify by standing up, and about a dozen responded. Mr Varley stated that at 6.30 this morning there would be a special prayer meeting on the bop of Mount Eden, and he expressed a hope that a large number of devout people would meet him on that eminence to see the sun rise. He said that he had only that day ascended Mount Eden, and that, although he had travelled in many parts of the world, he had never looked down upon a fairer scene. Mr Varley will deliver another address at the Opera House at 7.30 this evening. The beautiful weatherthis morning caused about 300 persons to assemble at 6.30 o’clock on the top of Mount Eden in response to the invitation of Mr Henry Varley. After a hymn had been sung and prayer repeated Mr Varley read a portion of scripture, when another hymn was sung and the congregation dispersed. Many of those present were on the hill top by six o clock, being anxious to witness the sun rise. A large proportion of the audience were women and children.
