Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 1890.

' This above all—to thine own self be true, And it must follow ae the night the day Thou cansb not then be false to any man.’ Shakespeare.

The Waikato Arehidiaconal Conference meets at Kalikuti on Tuesday, the 25th inst.

Brother Henry Thompson, D.G.M., of Canterburv, K.C., has been elected as hrst Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge, of New Zealand.

The Presbyterian and Wesleyan services to he held in this district to-morrow, will he found duly advertised as usual. A supplementary mail will he made up at the Te Arol.a Post Office for Kingdom, etc., via San Francisco, this (Saturday) morning. Correspondence may be posted up to 10.45 a.ir. James May, an old Te Arolia and Waiorongomai resident, has boon engaged by the Whangarei Prospectors’ Association, to work in their mine at Puhipulii. A petition from residents at Waitoa Valley, asking to have a school established in their district, was read at the meeting of the Board of Education in Auckland, on the 15th inst. It was agreed by' the Boaid to ask for further information as to the number and names of the children who would attend. Amongst the Patent Office transactions in Sydney, we observe that provisional protection lias been granted to the following :—No. 2070, March 6. Marie Louise Smith and Ludwig Schmidt, Te Arolia, Auckland, New Zealand, for an improved automatic candle extinguisher, attached or unattached to candlesticks.

At the Supreme Court, Auckland, in Judges Chambers, in the 15th inst., Mr Stewart applied for an order adjudicating Reginald Aitken and Henry Cooper, cf Matamata, bankrupts upon the petition of Charles Ahier and Daniel Scelly. His Honor said the order could not be made to-dnj', as sufficient notice had not been given. Mr Stewart said in any case it would be desirable that there should be an adjournment, and he would ask that the application be allowed to.stand over till next Chamber sittings. The adjournment was granted. We understand a patent lias been granted at Wellington t ■ Mr David Whitburn, of Morrinsvilfe, for an improved tubular key. The chief peculiarity of the key invented by Mr Whitburn is that it cannot be choked by dust or other substances that may find their way into the bore. A s the implement can be applied to all locks of whatever size having the ordinary tube key-, it is likely to come largely into use. It is especially applicable to the locking and unlocking of railway points, and it ought quickly to supersede the keys at present used for that purpose. The ingenuity of Mr Whitburn is now being directed to the wo .king out of another useful invention for which also he hopes soon to abtain a patent.
