Piako County Council.
Special Meeting. Piako County Council met at Cambridge oh Saturday last. The first business was the holding of a special meeting, at which the following members were p-esent, viz : Crs Chepmcll (chairman), [lanmer, Horrell, Hunt, Ilcaoy, Murphy* and Mills. ~ ' .. Rescinding Special Order : The business for consideration was a resolution proposed by Cr Mills (notice of motion respecting which having been given by him at the previous monthly meeting) to rescind the special order made by Council on April 12th, 1888, and confirmed on May 12th, “ declaring that that portion of the County road from Ohinemuri County boundary going towards Waiorongomai, which lies within the Town District of Te Aroha, shall be placed under the control of the Te Aroha Town Board ; . and directing that the cost of construction and maintaining such portion of said road- shall be bo.ne. by Te Aroha Town Board.”
In moving the. resolution Cr MiPs said it would be remembered by Council that at the time this Special Order had- been passed the Town Board applied to Council for permission to repair tb6 footpaths in the main street (being part of main County road). The road in question was only about a mile and a half in length, and it was very hard lines that the maintaining of it should have been thrown on to the Town Board seeing the Town District was still rated by the Council. He believed the Town District proportion of aft in the £ County rate was about £ll4, and all they got back in return was the payment by the County of their proportion of Hospital and Charitable Aid contribution, about Ll 4. If the Council would relieve the Town Board of the maintaining of the main road, the Board would undertake to keep the footpaths along the main road in repair, free of expense to the Council. The motion was seconded by Cr Mm-phy; who said he did not think it necessary to say anything more on the question. Cr Hanmersaid he considered Bridge Street, Te Aroha, should be included in the order. Unless this was done, there Swoiild be a gap left of a few chains in length, from where the Thames-Waikato main road terminated at the Wailiou river to the nearest point of the Thames Arolia main road (Whitaker-street at the top of Bridge-street) ; he would therefore move that this portion of road be also maintained by the County. The Chairman ruled that as tho portion of road refeired to by Cr llanmer was not included in the special order, it could not be inclu led in the resolution rescinding that order. The motion was then put td the meeting (rescinding the special ordeiQ and carried unanimously. Notice of Motion re Bridge street : Cr Haniner then gave notice that at the next monthly meeting of Council lie would move that Bridge street, Te Aioha, be maintained by the County. The Chairmanjiaid the street in question, although to all 'intents and purposes a continuation oftliaTlinmes- Waikato main road, was legally at present a by-road within Te Arolia Town District, and the matter would have to be looked up before next meeting, as to wlrether"Cbunoi 1 were empowered to take such over. .
;v,. This concluded the business of .the special meeting, which was then closed and-, the ordinary monthly meeting opened.
