TE AROHA ASSESSMENT COURT

[To The Editor] Sir, —Will you kindly give me space to reply to a letter written by Mr Harris, relative to the action taken by me as Valuer, in opposing the substitution of Mr Lavery’s name in the Roll of Ratepayers, in lieu of Air R. Harris, the chairman of the Town Hall Company for the past year. I assume that the duty’ of a Valuer employed by a Town Board, is to carry out the duties of that office in accordance with tlie existing laws, and after having made a Roll and Valuation, to lawfully resist any alterttions, so that the roll shall remain as it was first rtade. At the' Assessment Court, I did what I conceived to be my duty (without fear or. favour) in opposing any.alterations that were not strictly in accordance with the lawami although I con d.der the substitution of Mr Lavery’s for Mr Harris’ name would have been right, I knew the proper course as laid down had not been complied with, hence my objection, I also knew at the same time tint iilterninns such as the above could he made by the Town Board at any meeting, so that 110 wrong would be done. As to iny, conduct complained of by inj r co- J directors, of the. Town Hal) . Company, do not think the public papers the proper, medium to,canvas.it. smsUiill leave that ma ter until, tlie next meeting of the Directors - X airi <6O. Francis Pavitt Valuer Te Aroha Town Board. Te Aroha March J 7th 1890.
