A DIFFICULTY.

LANDS WITHDRAWN FROM SETTLEMENT. An unlooked - for difficulty in connection with the proclamation of the Puhipuhi as a mining district has arisen. The areas gazetted last evening at Wellington as mining districts are stated to comprise the whole of two counties, Whangarei and Bay of Islands. In this lai’ge district there are considerable tracts of waste lands that were about to be disposed of to settlers. The consequence of the “Gazette’s” notice is that the Auckland Waste Lands Commissioner has had to withdraw the whole of the lands that were open for settlement, even including some lands that were advertised for sale on Thursday last. Before anything can be done in the way of settling lands in these two counties the lands will have to bo wifchdrawn by an Order-in-Council, and then 45 days’ notice will have to be given of the blocks open for selection or sale. It is stated that some 200 cases of applications for sale and settlement) are pending, besides seven applications for homestead selections in these countiee. A very lai’ge area in the two counties has been blocked o(F ready for settlement. To-morrow morning Mr Clendon, R.M., who leaves for Whangarei by the s.s. Wellington to-night, will issue miners’ rights to intending prospectors.
