MELOS WINS THE CHAMPION STAKES. j Melbourne, March 6. Threaten txt; weather militated against tho attendance at the third day’s racing yesterday of tho V.R.C. Autumn Meeting. After the first race had been run, a terrific thunderstorm, which lasted fully half-an-hour, book place, the heavy rain thoroughly saturating the ground. After the reverse suflered by the followers of the “blue and white” stablo, Dreadnought, who had been supported at seven to four on for the Champion Stakes, receded to live to four, and Carbine, against whom two to one had been laid, shortened to six to four. The result, however, proved that Mr Gannon’s representative, Melos, was better than either of the pair, and ho won the great iveight-for-age race by a length and a-half. Rudolph, who was sent to cut out the pace in the interest of his stable companion, was the first to move, Melos running alongside Carbine, and the favourite loitering in the rear. In the first half-mile, Rudolph had a lead of twenty lengths, Melos lying second, whilst four lengths off was Carbine, and behind him Dreadnought, two lengths away. Going along by the river the latter raced Carbine, but it was not till the abattoirs were reached that any great difference was made in Rudolph’s advantage. At the scraping sheds the trio closed on the leader, and here, the real issue beginning, Rudolph died away rapidly, and Dreadnought was first to land in the straight, followed by Melos and Carbine. Half-way up the straight, Carbine made his effort, but O’Brien endeavoured to get up on the inside, and his horse was blocked ; and Dreadnought finally yielding in the last hundred yards, Melos scored a splendid victory by a length and a-half, Carbine being third, half-a-length behind Dreadnought.
