SPEECH BY GLADSTONE.
AN ELOQUENT APPEAL, London, March 4. The Hon. Gladstone, in the course of his remarks in the House of Commons, on the report presented by the Parnell Commission, said the judgment given was unbalanced. It was absurd, he said, to deny that distress and evictions in Ireland had been caused by demands made for rents which it was impossible for the people to pay, and that this had led to outrage. It was impossible to condemn the Irish for repudiating the Act of Union, which was the offspring of tyranny and fraud. He said the attack made by the “ Times ” on the leader of the Irish people was a frightful outrage, and he appealed to the House to grant that tardy and scanty reparation which had been so long withheld. LONDON COMMERCIAL. London, March 4. Shipments of wheat on the passage to London, amounting to 7.700 quarters, have been sold at 34s gd. BALFOUR UNWELL. London, March 4. The Hon. A. J. Balfour, Chief Secre taty for Ireland, is confined to his bed by a severe cold.
