OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the OUinemuri County Council, was held in the Council Chambers, Paeroa, on Saturday evening last. Present : Crs Moore (Chairman), Nicholls, Corbett, Robson, Strange, Nash, and Quinn. The minutes of the previous monthly meeting were read and confirmed. Tenders Ohinemuri Wharf : Only one tender was received for repairing Ohinemuri Wharf, that of Mr A. Moore, £8 10s, which was accepted. Blinding Rea l Metal: Two tenders were received for ‘blinding* metal on the Ivotnata Swamp road, which were re-
turned, as the Council unanimously resolved that he work be not now done ; as i lie winter was so near at band. Wnitna. Drain: Per chain: Large drain (4ft at bottom, 4ft Sin deep): D. McCaulfield, £1 5s fid ; T. Quinn, 19s 9d. Small drain (3ft bottom, 4ft deep): L), McCaulfield, £1 2s fid ; T. Quinn, 17s 51. Cr Quinn slated be would be in favour of accepting the lowest tender, on condition that -the amount of money the settlers proposed to give (£3O), be handed into the County Treasurer. Cr Robson moved that the work be done. Cr Quinn : I don’t think the Council should go in for draining people’s private properly. Cr Strange stated that he would second Cr Robson’s motion, and thought it would be advisable to have the work done, now that the settlers were willing to pay half the money. Resolved that the tender of T. Quinn, for tlu large drain, be accepted. Right to Cut Flax : For the right to cut flax on the road and river reserves, within the County, for twelve months ; Ahua (Native), £7 4s ; E, Bein, 3s per ton ; E. Edwards, 2s 7d per ton ; H, H. Adams (accepted), £BO. Broken Metal : Mackaytown -Karangahake Road ; contract No. 266 : Per yard : J. Dean, 5s B#d ; J. Barrett and J. McGuire, 5s lid ; E. Bein (accepted), 2s7d. Correspondence : Kauri Trees : From T. E. Shaw, Forest Ranger, forwarding a report of the number of kauri trees, cut) etc, Cr Corbett said he thought it was time something was done in this matter, and the people who cut the timber made to pay.
Cr Strange said that persons unlawfully cutting timber were liable to a penalty of £5. After considerable discussion it was resolved that the Clerk write to the Warden, informing him of the way in which the kauri trees had been cut down. Annunl Meeting : From Mr Kenny, County Clerk, asking that the Council hold its next ordinary monthly meeting that day four weeks, March 29th, on the same day as the annual meeting would be held in accordance with Section 99 of the Counties Act, for annual allocation of County funds, etc. Resolved that the next ordinary monthly meeting be bell on Saturday, March 29th. Rangiora Punt : From settlers at Rangiora, stating that they had held a meeting, and fixed a scale of charges for the use of the Rangiora Punt. Balance Due : From C. Murphy, stating ilut there was still £5 16s 8d owing to him on his contract, that was determined at last Council meeting. Resolved that the amount be paid
Repairs to Main Road : From N. Dickey, asking Council to fill in a had hole on the main road to To Aroha, and offering to deliver twenty loads of shingle as a donation, which would be he considered equivalent to £5. Cr Robson said when people were willing to help the Council he thought they should do something ; and moved that Council spend £5 on this road, on condition that the twenty loads of shingle were laid down by Mr Dickey free of charge, as promised. The motion was duly seconded and carried. Valuation Roll : From—. McKennon, requesting that his liable be struck off tbe Roll for section No. 100. Resolved that the request be acceded to. Karangahuke Rea l Deviation : From Messrs Kelly and Pulton, asking for two month’s extension of time for completing their contract in connection with the Gorge Road deviation. Resolved that the application be acceded to Waihi Bridge : From Government, requesting Council to now call for tenders for the construction of tbe Waihi Bridge. Resolved on the motion of the Chairman, that tenders be called for the work forthwith. Gorge Road : From T. Bradley, drawing Council’s attention to tbe bad state of the Gorge Rond. Resolved that the Foreman of Works be instructed to have that portion of road referred to repaired. County Boundary : From Thames County Council, stating they could not see their way clear to co-operate with Council with respect to defining the County boundary at Hikutaia.— Received. Cr Quinn moved that an authorised surveyor be instructed to cut a line at Hikutaia, to define the County boundary. —Seconded by Cr Corbett. Cr Strange said that Mr Pavitt told him he had already surveyed the County boundary line, he would therefore move as an amendment, that the County Clerk write to Mr Pavitt, asking him if the line he had surveyed can be found. The amendment was lost and the original motion carried. Allocation of Native Rates : Resolved on the motion of Cr Robson that a Committee, consisting of the Chairman, Crs Nicholls, Quinn (and any other Cr who liked to attend), be held on Monday, March 3rd, for the allocation of Native The Wharfs: Resolved that Mr E. Edwards be requested to take charge of Ohinemuri Wharf ; and Mr F. Cock of the Settler’s Wharf. Waitekauri : Cr Corbett slated that he was not able to attend the last meeting of the Council, but he had seen Mr Gordon, Government Inspectorof Mines, on the occasion of his recent visit to the district, and Mr Gordon informed him tnat LSUO had not been granted
for Waitekanri at all. He (Cr Corbett) considered after what, had passed between the Council and Government with respect to this grant, that such a statement was very barefaced on the part of Mr Gordon, and it was simply adding insult to injury for him to say the Council could not now spend this grant. Resolved that the Clerk write to Mr A, J. Cai'man, M.H.R., informing him what Mr Gordon had said. Resolved on the motion of Cr Corbett tuat Collett’s tender (Waitekauri road) b° accepted, Fiilance : The usual Finance Committee’s Report was not read in open Councii. The amount due as contribution to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards is £si 15s 4d ; besides which Council have on hand prospective liabilities amounting to £BOG 8s BJ. The Committee recommended for payment accounts amounting to L 157 2s This concluded the business of tlio ordinary meeting. SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting was held at the close of the ordinary meeting, The Chairman stated the business to be considered was the advisability of passing a bye-law, fixing a fee payable by hawkers trading within the County. Resolved that the fee be fixed at £l. RIVER BOARD. At the meeting of the River Board, no business was done beyond reading and confirming the minutes of the previous meeting.
