Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19. 1890.

* This above all—to thine own self bo true, And it must follow as (he night the day Thou canst not then be false to any man.’ Shakespeare.

Two sales by }>nb!io auction at To A mini on Sal n relay next. See advts. Messrs W. P. Ciiepmell, 11. i. Clifford. M H arrison, F. J. Marshall, and J. Turnbun, were on Saturday last elected, without opposition, ns the Licensing Committe for Wuitoa licensing distiict. Nominations of candidates for the election of a Licensing Committee for Te Aroha licensing district, will lie received by the Returning Officer. Mr 1". Pavitt, at tlio Public Hall, Te Aroha, on Saturday next, 22nd inst., at noon. We learn that Messrs John Mardell and J. Tilsley, who recently entered into a contract with Mr Coulthard, thereby leasing his flaxn.ill as a going concern, do not purpose renewing the contract, which we b.-lieve terminates at the end of this week. Since they took over the mill work has been pushed on vigorously both night and day. V e understand the employees purpose giving Messrs MardeM and Ti Ikl ey' a supper and ‘social’ at the break up, .probably on Saturday evening next. Last week the Paeroa Cricket Club sent a challenge to (be Te Areba Club, which lias been accepted. The match will be. played at P.ieroa on Saturday rext, commencing at 11 am. The following players will represent To Aroha : Messrs Muldrum, Cochrane, Willis, Hirst. Caldnrwood, Walsh, Bygrave, Simmons,Young, Graham, P. Johnson, Hyde, Biggs, Lillies; who wiil stait in conveyances provided for theocciis on. from Mr Cochrane’s store at 8.30 a.ni. on Saturday. The second out door sendee in the Domain, wa« held on last Sunday evening, the attendance being much larger than on the previous Sunday. Rev Mr Svans con ducted the greater ptrt of the service, and was agisted by Mr Wild, who read a poition of scripture. Mr Evans delivered a very impressive address, asdid also RevS.Lawrv, short'y hefoie the service terminated, Mr Lawry being unable to. be present during tli© whole service, on account of holding service at Paeroa in the afternoon. Rev Air Nome was unable to be present, being absent conducting services in Ohinemnri district all day. Tt remains yet to be seen whether Mr Ed son’s phonograph can he turned to really practical account, and is not merely an interesting scientific toy. The instm nient has nut yet been placed upon the London -market, through hints have been thrown out i>.v Colonel Gonrnnd,; Mr Edison’s right-hand man, suggesting that the time is at. hand when the talking-box will bo -.as common as the telephoine, To-day the Colonel leaves London tor New York upon a mission connected with the machine. we .have been told, it lias been put in use in the United States upon a system of rental, and has be gun regularly to enter upon business life. The latest information is (hat when Colonel fjonraud returns from the States he will •probably carry out an arrangement with one of Rip leading London morning papers dry which one of the practical nse of -the phonograph will be illustrated. Articles or reports wi’l.be dictated to the instrument, which when charged will be carried into a r«om w I cere the typesetter is at work, and as the phonograph recites its message the ot> ei machine will set it'np—a perfection’ ol the saving of labour the possibility of vhii h has only been dreamt of within Hip v past l\-w years. This may be a dream, but sit idl e.vonts (be sober recital of it issinunJariv • inline sling, and will serve to sharpen popular curiosity.”
