SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of Te Aroha School Committeee was held last week. Present: Rev S. Lawry (chairman), Messrs Menzie and Heathcnte. Minutes of the previous monthly meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence : New Teachers : From the Board of Education, informing tlie Committee that Miss Mulgan, assistant teacher, had resigned ; that the second assistant teacher, Miss Hoiild, was ill with typhoid fever ; and that the Board had instructed Misses Sarah H. Mill, and Susan Ormiston, certificated assistants, to be in attendance when school re-opened on the 3rd inst., in their places. From the head teacher, reporting that Misses Mill and Ormiston had joined the staff ; that school re-opened on 3rd inst., when twenty-three new pupils had been admitte l ; that the supply of slates and desks was now insufficient ; also stating sorpe small matters relating to the recent school painting, etc , had not been attended to. Resolved that the matters referred to in the head teacher’s letter be referred to the Visiting Committee. Annual Report : Tlie Chairman’s annual report (since forwarded to the Board of Education) as follows, wns read : “The meetings of the school Committee have been regularly held during the year; and the work of the school has been satisfactorily carried oh by the teaching staff, under the direction of the head teacher, Mr Marsdon. The Committee regret that the attendance of the scholars has not been so regular as could be wished ; and they hope that some more efficient means of enforcing attendance may be devised, tlian that provided by the present compulsory clauses of the Education Act. During the year about £l7 has been raised by the public for tlie purchase of scientific apparatus for the use of the school. These have been placed in the hands of tlie head teacher. The total income of the Committee for tlie year has been L 42 0s Id ; and the expenditure, £3l 15s 6d. Most of the balance will be required for tlie payment of half the cost of painting the school buildings, which is now being proceeded with under contract to the Education Board. The accounts of the Committee have been forwarded to the auditor, in accordance with the regulations.” Inspector’s Report: The report of the Inspector was also read ; and on the motion of the Chairman it was resolved that it be received and banded to the bead teacher. Menzie and Aider weie appointed Visiting Committee for the current month. An account for £1 39 4d for cleaning was passed for paymept. This was all the business.
