TO MY LITTLE MURIEL, TRYING TO CATCH A SUNBEAM. Through the window on the floor Crept a sunbeam to and fro; Little Muriel, trotting o’er, Marked the sunbeam’s trembling glow— Sought, with hands outstretched in glee, To catch the tiny ray of light, But the sunbeam merrily Laughed, and vanished out of sight. Little Muriel, in your eyes You have caught the sunbeam’s light; There, as in deep haunts, it lies— Dancing, laughing, clear and bright. Never may that sunny ray From those dear eyes pass away. E. H. Gulliver. TO CLARISE. O’er rugged paths, by stony beach, Do you remember—you and I Did wander all afraid to reach, The place where we must say “ good-bye 1 The word was said; your hand in mine Lay clasped one moment; then, ah me ! Our ways no longer did entwine Except in one clear memory. And now I dream of your dear face, Your starlit eyes, your waving hair; And ponder e'en in vain to trace A reason why to love I dare. Days, months, and years roll slowly on, And still we both may severed be. Will you remember then the song The ocean sang to you and me '! Love ! Love! in every crystal spray; Love! Love! in every deafening roll: The sea-born breath, the twilight’s grey. All whispered love into my soul. Could you have known how much you had Your beauty thrown into my life, You might with pity have grown sad. Then, loviug, quelled my heart’s fierce strife. A captive in love’s chains I lie. My heart in vain sues a release; And though we meet not till we die, My soul shall love you—sweet Clariso! Harry Norman. Auckland, New Zealand, November 10th.
