Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 1890.

* This abova all—to thine ow n self bo true, mus k follow aa the, night the day Thou caueb nob then be false to any man.' SiUKIiSi'KAKK.

A re xuisition has been drawn up, to 'irfiieliwjUjayidy a large number of signatures of local residents lave been

requesting Mr T. Gavin to allow himself to be nominated to fill th-' extraordinary vacancy that has occurred on Te Arolia Town Board, owing to the resignation of Mr G. Ebert. Mr Gavin was a very useful member of tin late Town Board, took an active part in the carryingout of many of the improvements effected in the township by that Board ; and w s have no doubt, if In- I consents to be nominated, bis return is I practically assured. But, there is another side to the question to be co si lered also, —Mr Gavin’s. Conld he pos? by hope or expect to < ff j ct any reform by himself, or even with thea'sistance of Mr Lipsey? We fear not. Tue other three members of the Board would s'ill be in the majority, and no doubt will continue their career to the end of their term, much after the same style they have already ex; i t d. I they have any qualifications fitting them for the position they hold they would surely have evinced them before now,s eing they have been in office for over a year an 1 a quarter. The mistake no doubt was in returning such men to office. But now they are there just let them have rope enough and—the old adage will once more corn** true. We really shall be surpiised if Mr Gavin consents to be nominated on the present occasion, or connects hints If in any way with the present Board. Were a new Board about ko bo elected it would be quite a different thing, but under existing circumstances, seeing at most lie could only act as a ‘ break ’ whenever any extra foolish propositions were brought forward, we think, for his own credits sake, he will act more wisely to decline. We understand the requisition will be presented to him this evening.
