NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

THE INTERCOLONIAL MATCH VICTORIA BEATS NEW ZEALAND. Dunedin, January 20. The weather for the concluding day’s shooting was even worse than any day last week. At ten o clock a sharp shower fell, but soon cleared off, and a start was made with the District Match, for which four districts competed, viz. Wanganui, Taranaki, and Napier districts; Wellington and Wairaiapa district; Canterbury district; and Otago District. The shooting in this match was far below the average at the meeting, and Canterbury District secured first place *i h a grand total of 1,517. Auckland District had not sufficient men, and the Marlborough, Nelson, and Westland Distiicts did not compete. Intercolonial Match, open to all teams of lOirenfrom the Defence foices of Australasian forces and Her Majesty’s Navy ; 200, 500 and 600 yards : 10 shots at each distance. Prize, £ICO to winner, and medal to captain and each member of winning team. Victorian* Team.

The other scores were: Otago, 1.468 ; Wellington and Widrarapa, 1,419 ; Taranaki, Napier, and Wanganui, 1,3u5. The prizes were presented to the winners in the Concert Had of the Exhibition this evening by Mrs Roberts, the Mayoress. There was a large attenuance of local volunteers and public, the hall being well filled. Out of 320 competitors 239 have taken prizes. Lieutenant-Colonel Bailhe, in intro lueing Mrs Roberts, welcomed the visitors from Australia, and trusted they would return with pleasant recollections of New Zealand. He offered them a welcome to future meetings. As each of the Australian contingent was called to receive his prize he was greeted with applause. When the Victorian intercolonial team fell in to ieceive their prize *.nd medals, Captain Somerville congratulated them on their win, and said New Zealand would endeavour to send to the next intercolonial meeting in Australia a strong t* am with a view of regaining the lost laurels. T nee cheers were given for the winning team.

In replying Captain Hanby referred to the kind of treatment they had received here and the facilities given them for practising, to wuioh he attributed their success. Fiom what he had seen during the past week, he was confident that the co ony possesses marksmen who, when more accustomed to the Martini-Henry rifle, would hold their own against all comers, and the date he could see was not far distant when New Zealand would not only send a team to Australia, but to Wimbledon. In conclusion, he said the Australian con ingent would always have a warm place in th* ir hearts for New Zealand. The Northern representatives leave for home to-moriow morning.
