AN EX-AUCKLAND SPORT IN MELBOURNE.
Mr A. Todd, well known in Auckland, but who is now residing in Melbourne, has been up in arms against one of the papers there for hinting that Pretender, a horse owned by him, was not run out. Writing to the “ Sportsman,” Mr Todd says : “ Sir, —My notice has been drawn to statements made in a weekly and obscure contemporary regarding the pulling of Pretender in the Flying Handicap, run at Mentone on Saturday week. Now, I am prepared to make a declaration before a Justice of the Peace to the effect of my having backed the horse to win me £1,200. As I am about to consult a solicitor as to whether I have not a good case for libel against the said paper, I will now conclude by wishing you to publish this, just to put me right with the public.— I am,etc., Alex. Todd. Caulfield, December 23rd.” The editor of the “ Sportsman ” adds the following foot-note to the letter:—[“The bookmakers’ tickets shown to us represent fully the amount stated, and the bets were made with over twentv different wielders of the magic pencil.”] "
