COROMANDEL SCHOOL OF MINES.

The following is Mr Park’s report on the recent examination of students of the Coromandel School of Minos, which speaks volumes for the interest manifested in the work of the institution : School of Mines, Thames, December 27th, 1889.—1 have the honour to inform you that at the examination of the students of the Coromandel School of Mines, held in the Caledonian Hall, Coromandel, on the 24th instant, nine candidates presented themselves for examination in Mining and Surveying, and eight in Practical Assaying, with the following results :—Mining and Surveying : William Horne, 67’5 per cent, of total marks ; Colin Fraser, 67*5 per cent, of total marks ; A.H. Gatland, 65-0 per cent, of total marks; Geo. T. James, 53-0 per cent, of total marks ;F. Marshall, 50 0 per cent of total marks ; F. Colebrook, 27 0 per cent, of total marks. Practical Assaying: William Horne, 65*0 per cent, of total marks ; A. H. Gatland, 56-0 per cent, of total marks ; Colin Fraser, 42-0 per cent, of total marks; Geo. T. James, 4.1*5 per cent, of total marks ; F. Marshall, 34*0 per cent, of total marks; F. Colebrook, *29’o per cent, of total marks. These results are highly satisfactory, and l an evidence of close application and hard work on the part of the students. According to the scale of marks for certificates adopted by the Thames School of Mines in assaying, Horne and Gatland would be enti led to 2nd and 3rd class certificates, respectively ; while in Mining and Surveying, Horne, Fraser, and Gatland would obtain 2nd class, and James and Marshall 3rd class certificates. The following are the winners of Captain Hodge’s prizes : —Mining and Surveying : Colin Fraser, first prize ; A. H. Gatland, second prize. Practical Assaying : A. H.
