for a place in thewoihl Every niortnl is striving, With ceaseless endeavour, With mighty unrest; With caution and cure Ever shrewdly conniving To witi n position By others posset sed. To the tropics and poles Some will wander and wander, Pursuing a phantom That ever eludes; While others the star**illumed Spaces will ponder, Intent upon learning Their tenses and mcods. For a place in the vvor d As a scholar or teacher, The heart’s leading: impulse We fain must obey ; for the chapter of fame, As a poet or preacher, W« painfully wrestle By night and by day. A place in the world May be ours if we make it, In haunts of dishonour, In regions sublime, And success or defeat Will depend —as I take it— On whether we fancy To grovel or climb. A place in the world, Beit lofty or lowly Will never content us If love dwell apart ; Bo grieve not if fame lias deserted j’ou whollj\ Since your place in the world, dear Is here in my heart.
