AUCKLAND RACES. DERBY DAY. Auckland, January 2. TitF. weather was disagreeable yesterday in the early part of the day for the second day’s racing. A strong north-west wind blew at the time of the starting of the first event, and it was accompanied with dust, while rain also fell. However, it cleared up again about two o’clock, and remained fine for the afternoon. the attendance was very large. The racing was of a more exciting nature than on Boxing Day, and a sensational totalisator dividend was paid over Cambria, the winner of the Midsummer Stakes. The Derby only attracted three lunners, and Tirailleur making his own running, won from Cissy by three lengths. There was great cheering for Mr Gollan’s colt when he weighed in, and afterwards he was led on the lawn, where Mrs Mitchelson, the wife of the Acting Premier, decorated him with the Blue Riband suitably inscribed. Mr George Cutts again started with satisfaction. The sum of’ £9,476 was passed through the totalisator, of which amount £4,293 was invested in the paddock and £5,183 outside. Mr Stead’s times for the different stages of the Derby were as under:—Half-a-mile, 59aec; three-quarters of a mile, lmin 26sec; one mile, lmin 53Jsec. ; one and a-quarter mile, 2min 20sec ; one mile and a-half, 2min 45isec. As they raced into the cutting Rossiter was seen in front, followed by Recruit, Hurricane, Kneecap, Volcano, and Chemist. Recruit was the first into the straight, and passing tho stand he held a three lengths’ advantage of Hurricane and Volcano, who were racing together, while the field was whipped in by Chemist. There was little alteration in places round the bottom turn, but as they took the next hurdle Volcano had got within a length of Recruit, while Kneecap could be seen threading his way U P on the outside, Chemist still being last. At the cutting Recruit led Volcano a length, and then followed Rossiter, Hurricane, Kneecap, and Chemist. A little further Hickey gave Kneecap his head, and the son of Cap-a-pie ran up to the leader. They raced into the straight on even terms, Volcano running into third place. The two leaders cleared the last hurdle together, but here Kneecap did away from bis opponent and ran home an easy winner by two lengths, Chemist being three lengths behind in third place. Volcano fell at the last hurdle, but neither horse nor rider was hurt. Time, 4min ssec. Dividends : Inside, £2 4s ; outside, £2 9s. Teksum made play through the cutting a length in front of Corunna, Cartridge being «bhind, and Quadrant last. As they raced for the turn Corunna had slightly the best of Teksum, while Quadrant was four lengths in the rear.- Once in the straight, Corunna looked all over a winner, but at the lawn rails Quadrant, on the extreme outside, cume with a great run, and responding to the vigorous calls of Cask gradually got on terms with the leader, rand wearing him down won a most exciting race by a short neck. From thence home a pretty race ensued, and at the Derby Stand Souvenir, The Dreamer, Cambria, and Reprisal were racing almost in a line.
