FOXES FOR NEW ZEALAND.
CUSTOMS PREVENT THEIR LANDING. Auckland, Jan. 4. Foxks are classed as “ vermin ”in the list of animals prohibited by the Customs from landing in the colony of New Zealand, and acting upon this classification of noxious live stock the Collector of Customs at this port refused this morning to allow the agents of the mailsteamer Zealandia to land on the Queen-street Wharf a large case containing some twenty-four hale and thriving specimens of the American grey fox. These foxes are thefirst of a number imported from America by Sir James Hector, K.C.M.G., Curator of Colonial Museums, on behalf of the New Zealand. Government, for the purpose of ascertaining their value in destroying the pest of rabbits in the colony. Opinions differ as to whether the remedy would not be worse than the disease in this case, but the little animals will at any rate not be allowed to land here. They will have to be taken on to Sydney, and it has been suggested that they should be tendered as an unexpected donation to the Acclimatisation Society’s Gardens there.
