The Psyche, another cruiser for the Australian Auxiliary ' Squadron, has been launched. The Psyche is a steel cruispr of ■ the protective type, built for the Admiralty from designs by Mr \y, IL .White, and intended specially for the protection of the Australian . colonies. It was , decided , at a conference held about three years ago that the Home Government should build and equip five cruisers and two gunboats, while the colonies, should pay interest on the first.cost at the fate of 5 per cent, j the maximum to be £35,000, and that they should also pay for the maintenance, and tramping of three of the cruisers, and' the two’ gun-... boats, the maximum in .this case being' 1 £91,000. The other . two. .vessels are to . be kept in reserve in Australian": waters, and to be manned in the event of vyaf.at the expense of the home Government;. " The ■ agreement lasts for ten years, and only-’ terminates; then if .notice' has .been, two years previously.' On the terminatioir of the .agreement: the vessels, remain- the property of the Imperial Government.’The) five cruieere are alike.
