AUSTRALIAN HORSES IN ENGLAND.
An Australian in London writes : “ While at Newmarket I had a peep at the Australian horses. They all look well, and are in the best of health. But I am sorry to say that those who know most about them have a very poor opinion of their galloping abilities. A person connected with Dawson’s stable told me, to use his own expression, that * you could kick your hat as fast as they can gallop.’ This is not encouraging news for Mr White. Both the Chester colts have grown well, Kirkham es‘pecially ; but I believe that Narellan is the better of the pair. I heard something of the same kind about Lady Betty. She was to have started in the All-aged Stakes at Newmarket, on Thursday ; but in a bit of a ‘rough up’ on the previous Tuesday she was beaten so easily by a common hack that Mr Cooper decided to keep her in the stable. It is very disappointing to have to give such news about the Australian representatives ; but there is yet time for them to improve, though personally, from what I have been told, and relying upon the judgment of my informant, I doubt very much whether either Narel lan or Kirkman will be found good enough to start for the Derby. Still, as the same good judge said, ‘ ’osses do come on so wonderful in the spring that you never can tell how they will turn out, speaking a few months aforehand.’ No doubt the long voyage affects them to a greater degree than we are aware of, cooped up as they are without any chance of exercise. How seldom has an animal imported into Australia from England shown any galloping ability ! Panic is the only one I can recall to memory. ”
