NOTES ON THE MATCH.
Tho feature of the match was the collapse of our boys in the first innings. Most of them misjudged the speed of the bowling. Butlin is a faster bowler than any of the Aucklanders, having a kind of throw. Downes is a medium bowler, having a good length of break on both sides. Auckland fielded splendidly. In the second innings O’Brien and McPherson were repeatedly cheered, while the latter’s catch off Beck was very smart. Gardiner, Moresby and Kissling all fielded neatly. Downes, who is a crack footballer and “potter,” showed the best form, playing freely in both innings. Beck was in for over an hour for 20, and tired the bovrlers a lot. Auckland started the second innings with 83 to make up. Lynch and Kissling played steadily for about twenty minutes, twelve overs being bowled, and then started to hit. Both were applauded for their display. Kissling gave one difficult chance, while Lynch was faultless. Kissling’s score was made up of eight fours, one 6wo, and six singles. Lynch got three fours, O’Brien and Lusk one each. The wicket played was much better after lunch, the sun hardening it, and making it much better for the batsmen. Rees’s bowling was the theme of admiration, getting a lot of work on both sides. Lusk bowled with hardiuck. Otago wants us to play a return on Saturday. Kissling, after consultation, declined, considering it ; waa the best thing to get to Christchurch : and let the team •have plenty of practice. We leave for Christchurch on Saturday morning by express train. Most of the team again did the Exhibition on Thursday night to hear Miss Knight sing in “The Messiah.” She was in fine voice and was loudly applauded. Fowke, our “Blackham,” came in for lots of kudos, he having designed McArthur’s splendid show book. His football and cricket books are especially novel and good. '
