Bell slipped Rees for one, and Beck gave Lusk a hot one with his second hit. bub it was dropped. Stemson bowled the obher end, and started with a maiden. Bell hit Rees to the boundary for four, and Beck served Stemson the same. Telegraph, 10. Bell stepped out to llees, and Fowke stumped him. 12—1—7. Parker nex t star ted by cu ttin g Rees f or one. Beck snicked Rees for three, Fowke just missing. Singles by both men slowly brought up 20. Parker retired by a fast one from Stemson. 21—2—2. . Fox was the next man. Beck pub Rees to the boundary, and a maiden over followed, the batsman playing canny tiff Rees took Fox by a pretty one. 26—3—0. Harper snicked his first ball for one and then brought 30 on the telegraph by putting Stemson out to the boundary. The score was then 31. Harper drove Rees p-etbily for three, and Lusk replaced Stemson. He started with three maidens, and then Rees bowled Harper. 36-4-8. Haskell, the.next man, only lasted two balls, Rees bowling him. 36—5—0. Downes came next and played carefully. White brought forty up by cutting Lusk to the boundary. Beck, the stonewaller, was disposed of by Rees in next over, by McPherson catching him off a very hot one at square leg. Tne catch was loudly applauded. 42 —6—20. Williams, the next man, scored singles slowly ; then the new man hit Lusk for four. Downes served Rees the same two balls running. Williams tried to do ditto, stepping out to Rees, but Fowke 3tumped him. 59—7—4. Johnson joined Downes, scoring one. Telegraph, 60. Downes let out at Rees, who removed his bails by a leg break. 6 —28—16. Claffey helped Johnson to a leg bye when be was given out Ibw, Lusk. 63—9—0. Butlin signalled his arrival by hitting Lusk for four, and McPherson again brought down the house by splendid fielding,. stopping a stiff one from Johnson. Lynch and Kissling went in first. The former cut Downes for four. Both played carefully, seven maidens in succession being bowled. Lynch, by a late cut to the boundary, brought ten on the telegraph. Claffey replaced Butlin, and Kissling drove him to the boundary ; then he gave a
difficult chanceand hit Claffey again for four. Telegraph, 20;. ;'‘- : ' Singles followed slowly,and then Kissling put Downes but to the boundary twice. Telegraph, 30. As both batsmen seemed at home with the bowling, Downes was changed and Parker was placed the other end. Lynch put Downes to the boundary by a fine leg bit,bringing 40 up, bub was clean bowled next ball. 41—1—19. O’Brien filled the vacancy and Kissling got a leg hit to the boundary off Parker. Singles followed slowly, and tlipn Kissling brought 50 up by cutting one to the boundary off Downes, j Butlin replaced Parfcbr and a single was scored by both batsmen. Kissling scored another boundary hit off Butlin for a bye, bringing 60 up. O Brien cut Downes for four and then Downes was,shunted for Fox. Two byes brought the,telegraph up to 70. Kissling by a pretty drive sent Butlin to the fence for four. Then O’Brien gave an easy chance to Butlin, who dropped it. Fox’s next ball proved fatal to Kissling, who made 40 by clean hitting, only giving one hard chance. He played the bowling with ease. 76—2—40. Lusk filled the breach, and cut Fox for ono. Downes was put on instead of Butlin, and Lusk brought 81 up by knocking him clean outside the boundary. Tho Otago bowlers did all they knew, Fox giving O’Brien several teasers. Lusk got a single off Downes, making the scores level, and a bye made the winning run. Auckland thus won by one run and eight wickets. The following is the score:— Lynch, b Downes... ... ...
