OUR GOLDFIELDS ENCOURAGING OUTLOOK FOR THE FUTURE. Thames, December 17.

I feel suro that your readers will be pleased to learn that the outlook of tho mining- in dustry during tho coming your is very encouraging indeed so far as the Thames goldlield is concerned, and there seems almost a certainty of a considerable improvement taking place. The decision of the Moanntaiari Company's direcors to continue the main tunnel until tho Reuben l'arv reef is intersected is a wise one, and as the tiibuteis in the lieu ben Tan section are obtaining 1 rich specimen stone — especially as they go downwards — the probabilities are that the Afoanataiari Company will be well repaid for continuing the tunnel. Then the Saxon Company are losing no time in canying out the necessary preliminary works for opening up their new le\el (No. 6), and here also there is every likelihood of the work proving reproductive once tho reef is to hand, though of course it will take a tew months to drive the new level. The prospects of the Lone Hand Company also bear a rosy hue. Capital pi ogress is being made with the work of putting in the low level drive, and once the reef is bo hand and driven upon, there is every reason to believe that rich deposits of gold will be unearthed, as good gold was left in tho floor in places in the level above. A mine which promises to pay further dividends for some time to come is the Waiotahi, while the New Manukau should continue to pay itd way as heretofore from the amount ot gold won, and should the May Queen come up to expectations, it also should come to the fore during the coming year. Operations in the Fame and Fortune mine, in the Waiotohi Creek, are being conducted by Air Kersey Cooper, on behalf of a London syndicate with successful results, and the prospects of the Thames Mining and Prospecting Company (Sydney) have considerably improved within the past fe.v weeks. The Cambria will most likely pay its way for some time to come, and several now private ventures which have lately been started, such as Darrow's, Comer's, Hansen's, etc., cannot fail to result beneficially to the district. Under the whole of these circumstances there does not aeom the slightest doubt that there will be a great improvement in the mining industry during the new year upon which we are now about to enter. Otv.ma Claim. — A telegram received this morning from the Otama claim, Kuaotunu, states : — Reef looking well in upper level, gold showing in face. Splendid country. Expect to get gold any minute in low level.— (Signed) H. T. Rinus. Blanche. — The manager continues to break out quartz from Trenboth's leader, and has seven loads ofquaitz in the paddock. Tkhnton. — The mine manager and ]\lr Adam 3, the Co. 's surveyor, have visited the Saxon mine at No. 5 level, and from deve'opments there some little distance will require yet to be driven to intersect tho hangingwall lode. Tho country in the Tienton drive at No. 5 level continues to be all that can be desired for gold.

Thames, December 18. Lone Hand. — The contractors who are engaged putting 1 in the (Jeneral Chute drive afc the low level have made excellent progress during the past week, having driven 24 feet. A capital class of sandstone i 3 being penetrated. It may be mentioned thao this drive, which is at present being driven through the Adelaide ground, will require tobeextended afurther distance of about2ooft to reach the Lone Hand boundary, after which the City of Manchester reef can be intersected by drhing a crosscub some 100 ft. On the other hand, however, tho Moa reef should shortly be to hand in the low level, when, if deemed advisable, it could bedrhen upon to its junction with the Manchester reef in the Lone Hand Company's own ground. At the magazine level the Moa reef is being stripped, while quartz of the usual grade is corning to hand from the stopes. Saxox. — As the result of crushing operation& at the Company's battery for the past Meek, there are 4020z of amalgam on hand. These is no change to report in the mine.
