PROPOSED REFORMATORY FOR GIRLS. PROPOSAL TO CHARITABLE AID BOARD. Auckland, December 17.
Yj'.stkrday afternoon a deputation consisting of the Revs. Messrs Monro and Hill and Mr Brakenrig waited on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to lay before the Board certain proposals regarding a reformatory for young girls. The ttcv. Mr Monro said that at a large and influential meeting in the V.M.C.A. it was recommended that a Committee should be appointed to consider the question of establishing a reformatory for young gills beginning a lifeof vice. There wassuch a reformatory for boys, but none for girls, and it seemed the only thing was to commit these girls to Mount Eden. After a good deal of inquiry the Committee had decided to request the Charitable Aid Board to assist them in the establishment of a reformatory. They considered that they could nob depend entirely on private benevolence. The Rev. Mr Hill said that about £300 would be required. If convenient to the Board this afternoon they should like to know if the Board would support them. He believed that in Canterbury the Board there did assist. If this Board decided to oppose them there would be little use in starting, Mr Lennox aaid he should like to see the homo started first and in some sort of order before assistance was given or asked for. Mr Mays said he did not know whether the establishment of such an institute was within the powers of the Board. Mr Monro said he understood there was a sum of money in the bank for this purpose if the reformatory could be started, but they were afraid to start it by private benevolence alone. They undei-stood that the Government would only assist through the Charitable Aid Board. Mr Mays thought the best plan would be to apply to the Government. To put the matter into some form, he would move, " Thab the deputation be requested to put the proposal in writing, and. when received, be considered by the House Committee for report, with a view to communicating with the Government." Mr Bollard seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
