ASSAY BY MR GALBRAITH.
Mr D. X Sheriff Galbraibh has assayed some stuff received by him from Hikurangi, and brought down by yesterday'o boat from Whangarei, bub the oro is \ery poor, in fact hardly worth assaying. The ore is not at all like the original Puhipuhi stuff, and must como from a different reef. Mr Galbraith has assayed no stuff for Air Hobbs, but thinks this stuff which ho assayed yesterday may be what Mr Hobbs brought down.
Cokomandel, December 4. Royal Oak. — About 50lb specimens wero obtained yesterday. The gold is fctill going down,
Thames, this day. Waiotaiii. — The monthly cleaning up and retorting took phce yesterday, for tho excellent return of 3090z", which was afterwards melted into an ingot weighing 3060z 6dwt. This is the product of -220 tons of quartz crushed trom all parts of the mine. Camuria.— A parcel of 151b of picked stone \va3 obtained yesterday afternoon when breaking down the reof in the second stope over the western drive at the intermediate below No. 3 level. Colours of gold were also seen pretty freely distributed through the general dirt. There is no change to report from other parts of the mine. Lone Hand.— The contractors in the General Chute drive at the low level have driven a further distance of 29 feet during the past week, tho country being a splendid class of sandstone, and very favourable for progress. The Moa reef at the magazine level is still being stripped, and stoping is proceeding as usual on the several leaders, and also on the Manchester reef, in all of which coloui-3 of gold are seen when breaking dewn. Crushing will be commenced next week. New Manukau.— The monthly cleaningup to-day produced 270z retorted gold. S vxox.— Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5 stopes on the western or seaward side of the junction, on the footwall reef are all turning out a large supply of payable quartz and upwards of 301b of picked stono have been saved from the etopes during the week. In the new crosscut staited at No. 5 lovel east of the cross or Ointy reef to pick up the No. 2 reef, a very promising reef was met with fully eighteen inches thick, running in a good channel of sandstone country. Gold is showing freely through thequartz. Itis believed tobe the No. 2reef. The No. 1 main reef runs from four to five feet in thickness, piomisinj; well, and a little tiold has been met with in a vein on the hangingwall of the main body. The country around is of a favourable nature In tho drive along the specimen leader near the shaft at No. 2 level colours of gold are being freely seen through tho quartz. Tho No. 4 level crosscut has now been driven a distance of 125 feet on the hanging-wall side of the main reef, and is at present in a splendid channel of goldbearing country. From the numerous block \eins the crosscut is now passing through it is believed fresh leaders are at hand. There are on hand 4070z of amalgam, with 451b picked stone. • Noriolk. — A very encouraging report is to hand from this mine. Tho contractor's 200fb contract should be finished by to-day. The crosscut passed through a reef about eight feet wide at the back of the Norfolk reef, and had before this passed through several good-looking quartz vein*. There is no necessity to do any more cross-cutting at present, as there are already a number of reefs to work upou. The prospects in this part of the mine are exceedingly good. Messrs Darron and Cook have got very good gold on the level at the Star of California reef. The reef is about 2 feet 6 inches wide, looks well, shows good prospects, and is easily worked. In all probability there will be from thie part an unlimited supply of quartz for the battery, which from the presont value of the reef should prove highly remunerative. To-day tho mine manager started to sink a winze to connect from this level with the crosscut beforo mentioned. Cambria. — This morning the mine man - ager wired : " Fifteen pounds picked etone from the second stope on western drive intermediate below No. 3 level."
