A DIFFICULT JOURNEY. Kawakawa, December 4.

A party of eight started on Monday and bad to turn back to the Hikurangi Hotel, twelve miles out, after picnicking on the bridge of the same name. They made another start next morning, and took 14 hours to complete the journey of SO miles. The rush of water hear Edwards', the half-caste's, approaching Puhipuhi Block from Whangarei, was fearful, and there was a narrow escape from loss of life in consequence. Unfortunately, Christy, the driver, only had two horees. The road into Puhipuhi from here is still high and dry, as I have only just come in. The rain has been something terrific, but there is still only two ieet of water in the Tirionga River crossing.
