start, of which Occident had rather the best, and British Lion the worst. Alsace was taken at once to the front, with St. .James second, Recluse and British Lion last. Passing the stand the first time Alsace was still in the van, then came St. James ahead, in front of Quibble, with Occident fifth, almost pulling White out of the saddle. After two thirds of the distance had been traversed Alsace was firet, leading Sfc. James and Occident, who were running side by side, the rest bunched together. Alsace had now shot her bolt, and Recluse was seen to make a forward move and at the bend looked dangerous ; but once well in the straight it was seen that the race was confined to the local representatives, and a tine exhibition of riding was given on the part of both jockeysOccident, whom White had ridden cleverly, eventually winning by a short length. Quibble was third, about three lengths off; then came Recluse, British Lion, and Alsace last. Time, 2min 40|sec, which is a capital performance when one takes into consideration the gale that was blowing. Dividends, £1 15s 6d on both machines. Criterion Stakes of 150sovs, second 20sovs, third lOaovs. Five furlongs. Mr Stephenson's eh h Tempest, 7st 111b (White) 1 Mr Stead's b c Morraine (Derritt) ... 2 Mr Butler's br f Lady Mab 3 Pygmalion (9st 71b), Bay £ing (6st 12lb), Vendetta (6st 51b), Watercress (6st), and Roseleaf (ost) also ran. Morraine was taken to the front, with Lady Mab next, and Pygmalion handy. Rounding the turn all were well together, save Roseleaf, who was never in it. Coming into the straight Pygmalion made his effort, but the weight proved too much and he dropped back. Up the straight a fine race took place between Morraine, Tempest and Lady Mab, the whips being out. Tempest lasted the longest, and won comfortably by about a length. Time, Imin 4isec. Dividends, £3 17s and £3 19s 6d. Onslow PiiATE, one mile and a quarter, of 200sovs, -with a sweepstake of ssovs each. The second horse to receive 50sovs, third 20sov8 from the stakes, Weight for age. The four were despatched to a fair start, Cynisca showing in front, with Scots Grey, Tirailleur, and Sultan well together. As they passed the stand Scots Grey was in front with Tiralleur only a neck behind, the other two being a length away. At the half-mile post, Sultan and Scots Grey closed up, and as they rounded the corner all were well together. At the turn into the straight Scots Grey had the advantage, and as Thompson had to ride Tirailleur it was thought he was done, but the horse only wanted shaking up, and once in the straight he took the lead, Sultan passing Scots Grey. A good race home followed, but Tirailleur had all the best of it, and won by nearly two lengths without being distressed. The win was not popular, being received with hooting, which was renewed when the horse was taken to the weighing enclosure, where tor a few seconds a series of counter demonstrations took plaoe of cheering and hooting. Time, 2min 15sec. Dividends, £2 12s 6d and £2 9s. Spring Handicap, one mile, of 250aovs, with a sweepstake of 2sovs each ; the amount accruing from the sweep to go te the second horse. Lady Florin and Don Ccosar were the first to show in front, and as they rounded the turn they were joined by Cypriote, with Ruby and Alcinous. handy, leading the next division, the only one apparently out of it being Erin-go-Bragh. The three in the van ran locked along the back of the course. At the turn Ruby improved his position, and turning for home joined the leaders. . They were sent away in splendid style. Before 100 yards had been covered Francotte went to the front, Rose Argent, being second, and the rest in a cluster. Francotte kept his lead all the way up the straight, and though Forester came "with a great rush he could never catch the son of Musket, who won by three lengths, Emmason a poor third.
