MEAT SUPPLY. THE BUTCHERS AND THE FREEZING COMPANY. AN AMICABLE ARRANGEMENT.
There has been severe cutting in the retail butchery busine&s for some considerable time pasb owine to a disagreement between the Frozen Meat Company aid the retail batchers in reference to the purchase of prime joints. This disagreementled to the Company entering: into the retail business and establishing a number of branches in cowu and suburbs for t-he disposal of the meat formerly taken by the butchers. The result, as stated at the outset, has been severe cutting in prices, with a result pr jbably very unsatisfactory to both parties. Since the Frozen Meat Company went into liquidation efforts have been made to restore the old order ot things, and the purchasers of the Company's assets have, during the present week, been endeavouring to come to some arrangement with the butchers. So far there has been a mutual disposition to meet one another and several meetings ha\e been held with the object of settling matters in dispute. The owners of the property have made several concessions, and yesterday things were so far arranged that the representatives of owners and the Committee of the Butchers' Association arrived afc an understanding, which it is understood the Committee will recommend to the general body of butchers ior their adoption. The effecfc of Lhis would be to remove the present differences, and put an end to the present cutting of prices. One of the proposals is that the present shops cariied on under the name of Ihe Frozen Meat Company shall be leased by tender, the lessees being bound to deal with the owners for their wholesale purchases. These proposals are now under consideration of the Butchers' Association, and it is hoped that a mutually {satisfactory eonclu&ion of the difficulties hitherto «£Jsting will be arrived at.
