POHIPUHI SILVER MINE. THE TRIAL CRUSHING. 2740 Z. SILVER AND 13DWT. GOLD PER TON.
The news of the trial of the ore from the recently-discovered silver mine at Puhipuhi has created a considerable stir among those interested in mining in Auckland. As will be seen from the appended telecram the return is very much less than was at first reported, but nevertheless is still mobt encouraging. We are informed that the trial was made from one of three parcels of about a ton each, broken down from tho three large reefs at Pupipuhi. There was no special sbone chosen. It will be remembered that Mr Goi'don, the Government 'Mining Inspector, spoke very well of the assay test made by him. But those interested desire to have a further test on a large scale, and for that purpose sent the staff to Waiorongomai, where there exist the very best facilities for a good trial. Should the " general dirt " of the reefs { give such good results there can be little doubt that the discovery of silver at Puhipuhi must have a beneficial ettect on the whole of the Auckland district. Though the Puhipuhi country is very rough, the value of the stuff appears to be such that it will pay to send it to Waiorongomai in quantity, as it can be carried by water most of the way. There are three large reefs on the property hitherto prospected and all seem to run for a considerable distance; but the cost of erecting the necessary machinery on the spot would be very great. A number of gentlemen interested in watching the prospects of the district left by the boat last evening for Whangarei, and we shall probably hear more of the discovery very shortly.
