Japanese papers give an account of another disaster which occurred on September llfch, the same day hundreds of buildings and nearly all the gardens of Yokohama were wrecked by a typhoon. Most of the damage was done by a tidal wave, which swept away about 800 people and ruined over 2,000 houses. The coast of Owari and Mikawa, on the Gulf of Owari, and of Miyagi Prefecture, near Shiogama, was the scene of the calamity, of which the " Mainichi " eives the following account : Hea^y rains were experienced in the vicinity of Hazugori, Mikawa province, on the afternoon of September 11th, and about 8.30 p.m. a large tidal wave invaded the sea coast. Many embankments were destroyed and the sea soon spread inland. The wave is said to have been fifteen feet in height in Yoshidanmra. A large number of buildings were carried away in various villages and much loss of life caused. In Oguii-Shinden twenty-three houses were swept away, and out of ninety persons fiftyfour were killed. In Koyabumura over forty houses were carried away, and oub of 250 persons 60 are missing. In Ikutamura 120 houses were carried away and 20 others were crushed, 40 persons being drowned. In Yoshidamura, out of 650 houees 350 were swept away, and out of 3,260 persons 428 lost their lives. In Tobamura, out of 220 houses and 1,130 of a population, 12 houses were crushed and 40 persons were killed. The total number of bodies recovered is 369, and 250 persona are still missing.
