A TERRIFIC GALE.
Tu eke was a heavy gale on October 7th throughout Great Britain and Ireland, being e&pecially severe along the Mersey River and in the Irish Channel. A large number of shipwrecks are reported. The storm destroyed one hundred yards of the Holy head breakwater, and isolated the lighthouse. The coast was strewn with, w reckage. Among the incidents of the tempestuous time was the wreck of thoßritish gunboat Enterprise, on Anglesea ; all hands saved. The British ship St. Louis, from Quebec, went ashore in the Mercey ; a large steamer grounded off Aberifraw, Wales ; Bribi&h ship Narcissus, from San Francisco, ashore at Westport, Ireland. The steamship Augusta Victoria, ab New York, October 12bh, from Hamburg, narrowly escaped foundering ; the boatswain and several passengers were badly hurt. The State line steamer State of Nebraska, for New York, collided ab Greenock with the Allan line steamer Norwegian, from Montreal, and the former was driven ashore in the ferry slip ; there were many passengers on board at the time. On October 14th the steamship Italia arived ab New York, disabled and in tow of he steamship Gellerb. The Italia broke her shaft on the Monday preceding, 700 miles east of Sable Island, during the storm. A furious storm also prevailed along the New England Coast on October 14th, covoring the shore with wreckage. Several drowned persons have also been washed up. The steamship City of New York was. aground at Gedney's channel in the lower part of New York harbour.
