TE AROHA.

i shoot is now being put in to cany off the I whole of the-water thafc lias been finding its way down into No. 4. winze, whera a large Mock of ground has already been opened up for stopirg. A parcel of ore fro*n this portion of the mine, was recently carted out to the To \roha S. and GM. Co.'s reduction works, Waiorongomai, for special treatment at these works, with a view to ascertaining the most satisfactory and advantageous method of doaHng with it. Just at present work will hoi confined to driving and sloping on No. 3 level, forwarding the whole of the quartz so broken out to the flat, and also sending down the quartz now stacked at the upper workings to the flat. We understand, however, the directors have under contemplation the advisability of continuing the lowest level (known as the May Bell level), a Further distance of about 300 feet, for the purpose of satisfactorily proving the size and value of the reefs at that depth (between 700 and 600 feet), as the directors consider, judging from the result of enquiries they have made from experts and others, and tho ascertained results of mining in other counties), that there is good reason to believe that the zinc — the existence of which in the "ore hitherto broken out, has caused so much trouble in treatment— will probably gradually disappear as the reefs go downwards. We are informed this is the expressed opinion of some well known experts who have been consulted on the matter ; me being, it is said, considered what might almost be termed — more or less — a surface metal. The importance to the Company of demonstrating with respect to their property, whether this will prove to be the case or not, can easily be understood, as if the theory is found correct in their case, the chief difficulty the Company have had to contend with would be lemoved, the wo-k of separating the gold and sil ver in the oie being comparativelyan easy 'matter if no zinc is present. Should the directors decide to extend this lower tunnel as proposed, it would necessitate fuither driving to the extent of about 300 feet. A parcel of about 10 tons of ore from this mine is about to be shipped to the London directors. Mr Chambers left for Auckland by train yesterday morning, aud Mr Porter for Karangahake-

Champion G. and S. Mines : Messrs John Chambers and Adam Porter, directors in this Company, arrived from Auckland , by train ,drt Tuesday, and spent* Wednesday and Thursday inspecting work done, recently erected aerial tramway, etc, etc. Some slight' alterations are to he made with respect to the aerial tramway, sucu as putting up an extra- trestle or two, but on the whole, we understand the working of the tramway is considered satisfactory. Up to the present only 51 buckets have been attaohod to the wires, but an additional 15 (making a total of f G5) will be at once put on. The tram is capable of cairying about SO buckets if necessary. From the result of the working so far, it is estimated that ore can be transported to the flat from any portion of the Company's property at a »cost> not exceeding la 3d pur ton. A
