THE MELBOURNE STAKES

There will be no end of interest in the Melbourne Stakes this year, run as n>>ual j on the opening day of tho V.R.C. Spring Meeting. The entries comprise :—Silverton, Bravo, Sinecure, Rudolph, Abercorn, Singapore, Carbine, Benzon. Chicago, Don Giovan, Tradition, Loyalist, Newt master, Melos, Manton, Cardigan, and Antaeus, all of vrhom nre engaged in the Melbourne Cup with one exception. It is open to question whether such a first-class lot havo been entered in ony previous year. Dreadnought's name is 'missing from' the entries, showing that he is to bo kepi for the Derby, but .with Abercorn, if at hia best, not to mention the three-year-olds, he will have a worthy representative. The meeting oi Carbine and Abercorn will be one of tho features of tho day. Tho Melbourne Stakes is celebrated for the victories of Darobin, Malua, Commotion, Trenton and The Australian Peer, and 'still more notorious owing 'to the defeats of The Assyrian, Sheet Anchor and Dunlop, each of whom subsequently won Uie Melbourne Cup.
