IN LOVES WITH A LIFE CONVICT.
A Pretty Girl Elopes from a Penitentiary with One ov ihe Prisoners. Pretty Miss Mina Bain lives in Jeffersonvillc, Ind., opposite Louisville. The young lady is a tall handsome brunette, with black eyes and attractive manners. Last summer she was a clerk at Woodward's bookstore on Fourth Avenue, this city, and she was the object of much attention from the young men who thiong that street. She is highly educated, and is an accomplished musician. Last autumn she resigned her place at the bookstore, and became governess for the children of Deputy Warden Barnes, of the Indiana penitentiary at Jetfersonville. There she became a favourite. Among the servants about Deputy Warden Barnes's house was George Lowry, a lifetime convict, who has served 18 years .within the walls. He was sent there for murder in the first degree. He entered a mere boy, but being quite shrewd, he soon got into the good graces of the Warden. He was allowed to conduct a little stand near his work, where he sold cigars, toothpicks and other trinkets to the visitors. In this manner he is said to have made $50 to $60 a month. As there was no way uf spending it, he saved all of his earnings. Recently Lowry was made a 'trusty, 3 and was frequently sent with messages to the Deputy Warden's house/ There he met the pretty governess and fell desperately in love with her. -He is not handsome, but the $2,000 that are to his account in the penitentiary office, made him rather interesting. ,Last Christy mas he made Miss Bain a present of a fine dress, which was graciously accepted. Every time he visited the Deputy Warden's house he stopped for a chat with the attractive governess. Finally it was noticed by the people. When they spoke to Lowry aboutit he said she was merely a friend of
his, and was going up to Rush county, his former home, where, she would circulate a 'petition for his pardon. Last Friday evening Lowry and Miss Baiti Heavily amned guards wejce at',once*.'despatched in search of the cou'vicfc.., . _Abo"uti -eleven o'clock that night, ■when theyKaSr.glYei^jjJp the search and were preparing to fcerid' out circulars notifying the people of Lowrys escape, and offering a reward tor v his arrest, the convict suddenly walked in. He went immediately to the Warden, and said he had a confession to ma,ke. He told of hin love for Miss Bain, and stated' that they bad planned an elopement. ' A suit of plain clothes in place of his Drison gaib was to have been provided by a friend on the outside. Then he and Miss Bain were to meet at a place agreed upon, whence they would proceed to the office ot a magistrate, and be married. But, unfortunately for the lovers, everything went wrong. The clothes were not ready, and he knew that no one would perform the ceremony while he wore the convict garb. After strolling around until about e'even o'clock they agreed to return and postpone the wedding until some future time. Lowry had no intention of escaping. After the marriage he expected to return to the prison, in the hope of securing a pardon through his wife's efforts. Lowry and Bain have since agreed to defer the marriage until he is released. The Legislature of Indiana proposes to enact a law making twenty-five years in prison eq-uvalent to a life sentence. As one month in each year is allowed for good behaviour, Lowrys time under its provisions will expire in less than five years. He is still a ' trusty' at the prison, and is sent about Jettersonville on errands. — From an American paper.
