Plain and Fancy Dress Carnival at Te Aroha.

The Plain and Fancy Dress Carnival (for winch preparations have been in prosrress for some weeks past), came off on Wednesday evening 1 last, and was pronounced a most decided success. The Hall was very tastefully decorated for the occasion, Mr P, Faes carrying out this part of the arrangements in his usual efficient manner. The proceedings opened shortly after half-past seven with rinkintr, which wns kept up till about 9 o'clock, when the Hall was cleared and the Carnival opened with the Grand March, Mr Jas. May, of vv aiorongomai, officiated as M.C , ant', i pet formed his duties in an efficient manner Dancing was carried on till about midnight, when there was an interval of about an hour for supper which was laid out on the stage? the catering, which was entrusted to Mr P. Faes, gave entire satisfaction. After supper dancing was resumed, and kept up with spirit till nearly daylight. All present appeared to thoroughly enjoy thetnsches. The music was provided by Messrs C. Everitt( piano); ami A. Eveiiit (violin); who carried out their duties well- On the whole the Carnival is generally spoken of as one of the most successful that has ever taken place in the district. There were about sixty couples present, Waiorogomai, Waitoa, and Te Aroha West, etc., being well represented, A large number appeared in fancy cos'umes, many of the ladies' fan^y dresses were really splendidly got up, and set off the fair wearers to full advantage. As to who was ' Belle' — When doctors differ who is to decide? and not being a judge of such impoitant questions ourselves we have oskel several, supposed to le competent to judge in such matteis, but in this instaic there appears to be a wide divergence of opinion, as no less than six ladies have been mentioned as " most decidedlj the Belle." Under these c'rcumstnnces we deem discretion the better part of valour, and respectfully decline to act the part of umpire ; as after all it remains to a great extent entirely a matter of taste.
