MERRIE ENGLAND'S SALE.
It appears to be a puzzle in the South who lias really purchased Merrie England. First", we were informed by wire that it was a Sydnoyite, and then Mr Stead's name was heralded forth as the buyer, while the latest from Chri&tchurch put down the unknown names of Messrs Vernon and Musgrave as the new owners. Whoever has secured the colt,it is certain that a commission has been executed in his favour throughout the colony for the New Zealand Cup, and a decent bib of money picked up. The commissioner in Auckland tolls me that all he got here was 150 to 18 in small lines. With regard to the disposal of Merrie England there are many of opinion that the colt would have reached a higher figure^ if he had gone under the hammer, as was first intended, instead of beingsold privately. I know of more than one local man who intended to endeavour to buy the colt, and give a good price for him too.
