THE GREAT METROPOLITAN STAKES WINNER.
Of the many doughty deeds performed by Abcrcorn during tho four seasons he has now been racing, his victory in the .Great Metropolitan Stakes on Tuesday last must, be reckoned among the best. Only on one previous occasion in tho history of the race has a bigger impost boen carried to the front), and that was when The Barb won with 9st 101b, so far back as 1868. Abercorn's record is a splendid one, and among his many successes may be mentioned the A.J.C. Derby, A. J.CandV.R.C. St. Legers, ' and Champion Stakes, besides many weight-for-age races and two-year-old "classic" events. Two of his best performances were recorded in the autumn of last year, when he won the Place Handicap at Fleinington with 9sfc 101b in the saddle, and ran the mile and a-half in smin 38sec, while later on he "downed" Carbine in the A.J.C. Autumn Stakes over 1^ miles, there being 101b difference in the weights in favour of Mr Wallace's colt. Abercorn hao won more money in stakes than any horse that has yet raced in Australia, and despite that he has boen in constant training and racing since a two-year-old, he is as sound as the proverbial bell of braas. His record shows that he has won 17 races, been eight times second, third three times, and on two occasions unplaced. Abercorn's dam Cinnamon is an Australianbred mare, and was got by Goldsbrough (son of the N.Z. Stud Company's Sylvia) out of J Brown Duchess, by Whalebone out of Clove, the first A.J.C. Derby winner. Abercorn's victory raises his weight in the Melbourne Cup to lOst 101b.
