SINGAPORE.
Singapore, the winner of the A.J.C. Derby on Saturday last, was bred by his owner, the Hon. J. White. I saw the colt when a yearling, both in his box and gambolling in the Kirkham paddocks, and at that time thought him a very promising colt ; in fact, turning up my account of the visit in the Star, 1 h'nd that I voted him the " pick of the basket," which included Dreadnought, Rudolph, and Sinecure, and added : "A more symmetrical youngster I have not cast eyes on, and in addition he possesses the wonderful Musket quartern and loins." According to present accounts, Singapore now stands in height about 16.1, and he present? a very taking appearance. He is possessed of grand flat bono, and a set of legs of undeniable quality. His near fore pastern is white, and likowise are the two hind ones. He is a somewhat peculiarly, but powerfully built horne behind, great strength being prominently displayed, especially about the gaskins. His head is well set on to good and powerful shoulders, and he carries ample length of rein. As a two-year old, Singapore started but once, and ran unplaced. In his opening essay this season ho distinguished himself by winning the July Stakes, of 300sovs, at the A.J.C. Winter Meeting, carrying Bst 31b, running the seven furlongs in lmin 30sec. His next effort was in the Sydney Tattereall's Club Spring Handicap, when he was backed down to 2 to 1 in a field of 24, and ran fifth. This performance for a colt with any pretensions to win a Derby was so bad that he wont down in the estimation of tho*e closely connected with him and. the public at large, but he made ample amends for his defeat last Saturday, and his performance can bo numbered among the best that have been recorded for the event. Singapore's weigh c in the Melbourne Cup is now increased to 7st 61b. Malacca, the dam of the colt, was bred in England in 1881, and was imported to New South Wales by the Hori. J. White in "1882. She was got by King of the Forest "out of Catinka, by Paul Jones out of Ding Dong by Kettledruir., out of Stella by West Australian.
