' London, September 25. Mr Gladstone, in the course of a speech last night, said the coercive measures adopted by the. Government in relation to the Irish people, only induced the latter more closely to conserve their interests. The wife of Canon Holland, of St. Paul's, has joined 5 the 1 Roman Catholic Church. Burns is in favour of applying a small portion of the surplus to assist other strikers where necessary. The Australian Committee, however, insist on being consulted. Sydney, September 27. An important medical experiment has been tried at the Albury Hospital. An old roan underwent an operation, from the effects of which he was gradually sinking. The doctor, as a last resource, tried Dr. Brown-Sequard's system of restoting vitality (" Elixir of Life "), with, it is reported, marvellous success. The animal used was a ram, and the patient left his bed within a week. Mr Berry, an old and wealthy resident in New South Wales, has bequeathed .£30,000 to the Presbyterian Church of the colony, to found a hospital in the town of Berry, named after him, and to St. Andrew's University.
