THE CRONIN MURDER. Scene on the Mariposa. ATTEMPT TO ARREST A PRISONER. 25,000 DOLLARS REWARD.
Sydney, September 21. The " Telegraph " states that a man who was implicated in the murder of Dr. Cronin was a passenger by the Mariposa, which arrived from San Francisco via Auckland on Wednesday last. A cablegram containing this information was received by the police prior to the steamer's arrival here. The police were advised to watch for the individual in question, and it was further stated for their information that a reward of 25,000 dollars was offered for his arrest. On arrival of the Mariposa at Sydney the detectives boarded the steamer. They found the suspected party locked up in his cabin. The '• suspect " declined to come out, and threatened to shoot anyone that dared to break into his cabin. The detectives considered discretion the better part of valour, and determined to »vait outside until the party changed his mind. The cabin was kept in a state of siege until Thursday, when it was discovered that the prisoner had eluded their vigilence, and escaped. How the escape was managed is at piesent unexplained.

SULLIVAN'S SENTENCE. APPEAL TO CONGRESS. New York, September 20. John L. Sullivan, the pugilist, has appealed to Congress against the sentence of imprisonment passed upon him for a breach of the law in his fight- with Kilrain.

Melbourne, September ?1» A clerk employed at George's drapery establishment in Collins-street, which was destroyed by fire on Thursday night last, has confessed to havings accidentally set fire to the premises by dropping a lighte.fl" match on some inflammable material. He was unable to extinguish the fire thus caused.
