London, September 13. The strikers continue to molest the blacklegs, and to-day 250 of the latter were chased from shed to shed at the Albert Docks, finally being penned in a corner, but the posse of police prevented actual violence taking place, although the aggressors numbered one thousand. In consequence of Inis disturbance, a deputation Irom the directors of the dock companies waited on Mr J. Monro, C.8., Chief Commissioner of Police, requesting him to disperse the rioters. Mr Monro declined to take action, on the ground that his subordinates had repoited that matters were going on as smoothly as could possibly be expected. The molesting has occurred at other docks as well as the Albert, but the disturbers of the peace weie promptly paid off. It is believed that loafers and not genuine dock hands are responsible lor the outrages. At one of the docks to-day 30 blacklegs, who were hotiy pursued by 150 sinkers, narrowl) escaped being killed by a dock engine. Many of the blacklegs are terrified at the hostile action of the strikers, and have abandoned theii work. Two thousand fresh men from the provinces are already competing lor work at the docks. The leaders of the strikers are using every endeavour to induce the men to adhere to the terms agreed on between them and the dock companies.
London, September 18. The work afc the docks is proceeding quietly, except at the Albert docks, where the Unionists refuse to work with the blacklegs. Lord Mayor Whitehead and Cardinal Manning urge the strikers to fulfil the terms of the agreement. A3£per cent. £2,500,000 New Zealand conversion loan is expected to be placed next month.
London, September 20. Is is reported that a woman has been working in one of the Whitechapel slaughterhouses disguised as a man. The report has given rise to considerable excitement. The woman is suspected to be identical with " Jack the Ripper," the perpetrator oi the Whitechapel atrocities. The reserve in notes and coin at the Bank of England is ; and the percentage of reserve to liabilities, Consols 97. New Zealand fours, 108^, active. Australian wheat, ex warehouse, 393 6d ; New Zealand long-berried, stored, 38s 6d. The sugar market is quiet. German sugar, 1433 d; Java sugar, 17s 9d. Iron, 47s 3d.
London, September 20. The total donations received on behalf of the London dock strike amount to ;£ 40,000, including received from Australia. Sir Thomas Biassey has been appointed arbitrator between the lightermen and their employers.
fARis, September 18. In the couise of a speech to-day M Andrieux, member for the Department of Rhone, accused the Government of spending twenty million francs in bribing the press and candidates for the Chamber. He stated that the money was obtained by blackmailing the Credit Foncier and Panama Canal Company.
Valparaiso, September 18. Fears are entertained for the safety of the ship County of Carnarvon, which left Newcastle for this port on June Ist, and £63 premium is being asked for insurance. The County of Carnarvon is a vessel of 1,267 tons, and is under the command of Captain Roberts.
Sydney, September 18. News has been received from Fiji that Weaver, who was sentenced to be hanged for the murder of Captain Greenless at the Islands, has had his sentence commuted to imprisonment for life. The Trades and Labour Council of New South Wales have decided to secure the passingof a Bill prohibiting theintroduction of foreign or British worknen under agreements or contracts.
The floods have left Deniliqnin North in a mo3t deplorable condition, and the picture depicted i8 one vast sheet of water. Several narrow escapes from drowning are reported, the inhabibantte only being rescued in boats. In the wheat market there is steady business. Chick feed, 3s 4d to 3s 6d ; New Zealand milling, 3s lod to 4s ; Californian, 4s 5d to 4s 6d ; Adelaide, 5s 4d ; flour, New Zealand stone made, 103 to £9 15s ; roller made, 10s to ; oats, feeding, 2s 9s to 3s, seed, 3s 2d to 3s 3d ; maize, 3s to 3s 20! ; barley, Cape, 2s 7d to 2s 9d ; pollard, 8d ; potatoes, New Zealand, £5 to £$ ss, firm ; Circular Heads, isstO;£6; onions, Victorian San Francisco to ; butter, dairy made 9d, separator iod to 1 id, factory nd to is ; cheese, 4d to 7d, market glutted ; bacon, 6d to 7d, New Zealand 8d to 9b 1 .
Melbourne, September 18. Wheat market unsettled, nominally 4s 3d ; oats, New Zealand stout, ex store, 3s Tod ; maize, 4s n^d; barley, quiet, 3s iod ; bran, is 2d ; peas are in demand.
Adelaide, September 18. Grain business exceedingly quiet. Whear, for farmers' lots at outports, 4s 7<j to 4s 8d ; for shipping parcels at Port Adelaide, 4s xod to 4s nd : flour, roller made, to 15s; oats, New Zealand, in bond, 3s 5d to 3s 6d ; barley, Cape, 3s 3d to 3s 6d : English malting, 4s gd to ss.
Brisbane, September 18. It is stated on good authority that the discussion in the Cabinet which led to the threatened resignation ot Sir Thos. Mcllwraith, the Premier, was due to the action of the Northern faction, led by the Hon. John Murtagh Macrossan, Secretary for Public Works and Mines, who were angry at the overthrow of the black labour question. The Northerners weie supported by the Hon. Boyd Dunlop Morehead, Colonial Secretary, and the Hon. W. Patterson, a member of the Cabinet without a portfolio. The official explanalion states that difference of opinion exists only as to one of the items in the estimate. Efforts are now being made to eftect a reconciliation.
